Counting customers and seeing where they go

The Nalyx Footfall and heatmap block counts store entries and shows where visits go. Nalyx measures people coming through the door hour by hour and draws a heatmap of the busiest zones, using the existing cameras. The analysis runs on a computer installed in the store; staff are excluded from the counts.

Entrance counting

A camera placed at the entrance counts people coming in. From this count, Nalyx derives today's entries, footfall this hour and the peak hour, and keeps the visit history for one year to compare weeks with each other.

Footfall, working for the rota

The week's footfall can be read day by day and hour by hour, to spot the store's quiet hours and peak hours. Footfall feeds the rota: Nalyx can suggest staffing needs based on measured footfall, to open an extra till when customers arrive.

The heatmap

The heatmap colours the store plan according to traffic: hot zones, neglected aisles, departments where shoppers stop. The heatmap helps decide on a layout or a featured display, and feeds the featured display suggested by Nalyx in Profitability.

Where and how footage is analysed

Footage is analysed on a computer with a graphics card, installed in the store and sized for it. The Nalyx server analyses no cameras. Store staff are excluded from all footfall measurements, and no sound is ever processed.

What Nalyx measures, and what it does not

  • Traffic and busy zones, not named people: the heatmap does not say who passed, only where.
  • Customer visits, excluding staff.
  • Never sound.
